Many people know Eclipse as an integrated development environment (IDE) for Java. Eclipse is created by the Open Source community and is used in several different areas, such as the development environment for Java or Android, or as an application development platform for Eclipse RCP (Rich Client Platform).

Open source and a huge number of developers supporting the project. A built-in incremental compiler that runs whenever a file is loaded or code is updated. Ecosystem of Eclipse plug-ins is at the same time a strong side of this IDE and one of the main problems.

Conclusion

The use of open source and the developed community of developers is a plus, but it is better for novice developers to use another IDE. Eclipse has the most extensive ecosystem of plug-ins among all IDEs, as well as the most likely to "fly away" because of the installation of an incompatible set of these same plug-ins.
